Maheshtala P.S started functioning on 08.09.1904.The area under the jurisdiction of Maheshtala P.S is 24.137 sq. km. and the population is 307600 Maheshtala P.S has a heterogeneous population of 65% of Hindu and 33% Muslim community. This is the bordering P.S of Kolkata. This P.S is surrounded by Taratala P.S of Kolkata area and Rabindra Nagar, Behala, Thakurpukur, Parnasri, Bishnupur and Budge Budge P.S. This P.S has about 150 large and small industries of which Bata India Ltd. is one of the biggest industry and controls the main economy of this area. A.B.B (Flakt India Ltd.) is another important industry of this area. Earlier ECE and Usha Tele Hoist claimed to play a very important role in the economy of Maheshtala but their significance has waned over the years. Present economic condition of Bata India Ltd. is also not good. Present labour strength of Bata India Ltd. has been reduced to 2200 from 14000 of the earlier stage. Now economy of Maheshtala PS area is mainly controlled by textile industries situated at Akra and Chatta areas. This PS area also consists of more than 1000 warehouse of various products like tea leaves, garments etc. Prevailing Hindu- Muslim tensions make the area crime prone. Labour problems occur frequently, but the police observes strict vigil to identify the labour unrest and take pro active steps.
